Review: DAT HO Radio Is Eager To Perform
By WBØRUR, on the scene
SHANGHAI, China – The Chinese amateur radio industry continues to expand exponentially as reduced labor and materials costs combine to provide a perfect storm for manufacturing.
Hams are already familiar with the growing popularity of radios such as WOUXAN and BAOFENG.
Now, amateur radio equipment retailer Radio City is announcing a new import to US soil: the quad-band handie talkie “DAT HO.”
“DAT HO is unique,” says Wolfgang Von Steuben, Radio City’s VP of Sales for the Americas.
“DAT HO can operate on 144, 220, 440 and 70 cm SIMULTANEOUSLY! DAT HO will ‘do its thing’ about anywhere,” he explains. “It’s also a cross-band repeater. In fact, DAT HO is capable of AC or DC operation and is totally comfortable with either at full output.”
EQUIPMENT REVIEW:
Ham Hijinks obtained a complimentary DAT HO test unit for researching this article. DAT HO was eager to perform and operated as expected, but the following was noted by Ham Hijinks engineers:
- DAT HO has a colorful, attractive appearance but appears slightly disheveled in strong light.
- DAT HO prefers to work at night; although DAT HO can be coaxed out during the day.
- DAT HO won’t always perform as expected.
- DAT HO is not optimum for day to day use, but is superior in an “emergency”.
- DAT HO does NOT have a money-back guarantee.
SUMMARY:
DAT HO represents a good value. With the low price tag and lack of on-going commitments, operators should be able to enjoy the benefits of DAT HO with only limited exposure and liability. DAT-HO will remain active approximately 30 minutes for $50. An additional 20 minutes of performance is available by offering another $25.
