QSL Via Buro Confuses City Slicker
By WBØRUR, on the scene
NOTTINGHAM PASS, Wyoming – New amateur radio operator Byram Hedgecock may be confused, but he’s winning high praises from local farmers. Hedgecock recently bought the old Bob McDermott place west of Cheyenne.
Hedgecock, licensed as a General Class in spring 2013, mistakenly interpreted “QSL via BURO” as “QSL via BURRO” and promptly began contacting local farmers and ranchers to buy the famously stubborn animals.
“Yeah, I don’t really know what I was thinking,” says Hedgecock, who has only lived west of the Mississippi for the past 3 months. “I just assumed that I’d shove my QSL cards into the hand-embossed saddle bags and the burros would know what to do from there.”
Local livestock purveyors were only too happy to oblige Hedgecock’s confusion. The former Rhode Island resident purchased 75 head of burros from a variety of sources before he discovered his mistake.
“I had the QSL cards completely filled out and addressed, but I couldn’t get the damn animals to move even a step in the right direction,” he adds resignedly.
In an ironic twist, Hedgecock has opted to make the best of a tenable situation. He recently opened the “Southbound Mule” tourist attraction (even though the animals are actually burros) and now chaperones tourists on burro rides to the bottom of nearby “Grinders Gorge.”
The full burro ride package includes a dinner salad, ice tea or coffee, chuck wagon beans and a slice of pecan pie for $14.95 per person. Contact Hedgecock at Nottingham 4-5600 to make a reservation.
