Ham Radio Hashtag Overtaken By Rap Fans
By K5KVN, on the scene
ATLANTA, Ga. — It was a case of Twitter trespassing yesterday as fans of rap artist M.C. Hammer and ham radio operators found themselves fighting over the hashtag #hamr.
Ham radio operator Kenneth Singlemyre said he first saw the crossover at 8:30 a.m. “I was at work and had my Twitter page up. I always monitor the #hamr hashtag and suddenly I saw a crazy tweet about baggy pants,” says Singlemyre. “I wasn’t sure what that was all about, so I dismissed it.”
But, he says the odd tweets kept coming. “Several more came in after that, talking about baggy pants or flashy dance moves.”
That’s when he replied back. “I typed ‘This is our hashtag. You can’t touch this.’”
What followed was a back-and-forth volley of harshly worded messages in 140 characters or less.
Twitter user @MCisMyMan tweeted to the ham radio operators, “U should quit, because you are not legit.”
In response, twitter user @RadioLuvur wrote, “We R 2 Legit to Quit.”
After several hours of arguing, fans of the rap artist finally agreed to stop using #hamr and began using #hammer. Ham Hijinks contacted the International Hammer Manufacturer’s Lobbying League for comment on the use of #hammer but did not receive a response before press time.
After the #hamr Twitter turf war was resolved, ham radio operators decided to commemorate the embarrassing event by establishing the 1st annual “M.C. #hamr Contest.” The CW-only contest mimics the style of telegraphs and begins on Saturday.
The exchange for the contest is: [Signal Report] STOP. 73. STOP. HAMMER TIME.
